Creation ( Day Three )

Up until this point (Genesis 1:1-8) God has created the:

  • Heavens and the Earth
  • Light and Darkness
  • Separation of the Waters

Now that the waters have been separated and the waters and heavens created, God now creates the dry land and the seas.

Genesis 1:9-10 NASB Then God said, “Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. (10) God called the dry land earth, and the gathering of the waters He called seas; and God saw that it was good.

Let’s examine two words in the above verses; dry land and seas. What exactly was created?

Dry Land

Genesis 1:10 GodH430 calledH7121 the dryH3004 landH3004 earthH776, and the gatheringH4723b of the watersH4325 He calledH7121 seasH3220

H3004

yab-baw-shaw’
A feminine noun meaning dry land. This word can be an adjective as well. In all uses, it is contrasted with water. It often describes land formerly covered with water…

This land is in the same condition as when the Israelites crossed the Red Sea with Moses when leaving their bondage in Egypt. The waters were parted and they walked on the dry land [H3004]

Exodus 14:29 NASB But the sons of Israel walked on dryH3004 landH3004 through the midst of the seaH3220, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

Seas

Next we will look at the word seas as defined in verse 10 and learn what was considered as the seas.

H3220

yawm
From an unused root meaning to roar; a sea (as breaking in noisy surf) or large body of water; specifically (with the article) the Mediterranean; sometimes a large river, or an artificial basin; locally, the west, or (rarely) the south: – sea (X -faring man, [-shore]), south, west (-ern, side, -ward).

The seas also include the rivers that run into the seas, the surf, the wave breaks, ocean boundaries and shorelines. When you think about this it in these terms you can see that this was quite an amazing thing that has happened. God commands the waters where to stop; how far the ocean waves are allowed to travel up along the shores, where they will stop, and the distance they can travel from continent to continent. After the dry land ( earth ) and the seas were created, God then created the vegetation and seed bearing plants and trees.

Genesis 1:11-12 NASB Then God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them”; and it was so. (12) The earth brought forth vegetationH1877, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.

At this point, the earth now contains has rivers and oceans, as well seed bearing plants, fruit trees, food and vegetationH1877. What is considered vegetation?

H1877

deh’-sheh
From H1876; a sprout; by analogy grass: – (tender) grass, green, (tender) herb.

Day three complete!

Genesis 1:13 NASB There was evening and there was morning, a third day.

Keep an eye out for day’s four to seven!

Creation ( Day Two )

Now we see that here on day two, after God separated the light from the darkness on day one.
Day One Recap

Genesis 1:2 NASB The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

God now creates a separation from the waters – the expanse, as we can see in verse six.

Verse 6

Genesis 1:6 NASB Then God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”

Let’s take a closer look at the word expanse in the above verse:

Genesis 1:6 …”Let there be an expanseH7549

H7549

raw-kee’-ah

From H7554; properly an expanse, that is, the firmament or (apparently) visible arch of the sky: – firmament.

H7554

raw-kah’

A primitive root; to pound the earth (as a sign of passion); by analogy to expand (by hammering); by implication to overlay (with thin sheets of metal): – beat, make broad, spread abroad (forth, over, out, into plates), stamp, stretch.

Here we can see that in verse six God created a separation in the middle of the waters that separated them, like a skilled craftsman working majestically with his hands, He separated the waters into the heavens and the waters below.

Verse 7-8

Genesis 1:7-8 NASB God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. (8) God called the expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

What exactly does heaven encompass as specified above? Let’s dive back into the Hebrew text to see!

Genesis 1:8 …GodH430 calledH7121 the expanseH7549 heavenH8064

H8064

shaw-mah’-yim, shaw-meh’

The second form being dual of an unused singular; from an unused root meaning to be lofty; the sky (as aloft; the dual perhaps alluding to the visible arch in which the clouds move, as well as to the higher ether where the celestial bodies revolve): – air, X astrologer, heaven (-s).

Here we see that heaven refers to the sky that we see above; clouds, sky and the atmosphere / space; the universe – the heavens!

And all this beautiful work of God was created on day two.

Days three to seven still to come !

Creation ( Day One )

Starting off with Genesis 1:1, we see that it was God who created the havens and the earth. Not the big bang theory, spontaneous combustion, or some magical happening that evolved; it was God who created everything in the known Universe.

Genesis 1:1-2 NASB In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (2) The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

As we continue with the second verse in Genesis, we see that when God created the earth it had no form.

It was a formless void where darkness was over the surface of the deep.

Let’s look at what deep refers to in this verse:

Genesis 1:2 …the surfaceH6440 of the deepH8415

H8415

teh-home’, teh-home’
(Usually feminine) from H1949; an abyss (as a surging mass of water), especially the deep (the main sea or the subterranean water supply): – deep (place), depth.

From the Hebrew word we can see that, “the deep“, refers to a massive body of water. This mass of water according to verse two had no form and was covered in darkness.

Also notice that in verse two we see that Gods Spirit was moving over the surface of the water.

This is the first time in the Bible, right at the beginning, that the Holy Spirit is mentioned.

Verses 3-5

Genesis 1:3-5 NASB Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. (4) God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. (5) God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

Next in verses 3 – 5 light was created, and God separated the light from the darkness and called the light day and the darkness night.

This was the first day.

A Thought

One thing that verse four reminds me of is how Jesus (the Light) saves us from the darkness ( sin ).

John 3:19-21 NASB “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. (20) “For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. (21) “But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”

Only through the Light ( Jesus ) can we be saved from the darkness ( our sinful nature ).

John 3:16 NASB “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

Praise God for His mercy and the gift of salvation…

As I am starting over on my journey through the Bible, I wanted to spend a little time studying Genesis chapter 1 in depth.

This first chapter is packed with so much information that if we open our eyes and hearts we will be able to learn a great deal about our Lord and Savior, and how He created the earth and all things living within it, and how He provided for us from the very beginning.

As you study the 31 verses in this chapter, you will see that from the very beginning of the scriptures it talks about:

  • The trinity of God
  • The purpose of man and woman
  • How God provides for His creation
  • Mans roles and responsibilities
  • Definition of time

To name a few…

In the next few post, I will try and dive a little deeper as best I can to share with you what the Holy Spirit has shared with me.

If I miss anything, I urge you to please post a comment and share your findings as well in this journey through chapter one of Genesis.

I look forward to hearing from you…

PS: There might be a few post in between the series…
