NEW REPORT CONTAINS SHATTERING STATISTICS

The 2010 Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches , published by the National Council of Churches, appeared in bookstores today with shattering statistics on the state of Christianity in America.
Of the 25 leading denominations, only four managed to post modest gains; the others continue to decline at precipitous rates.
The Presbyterian Church USA is down 3.28% to 2.9 million members; the American Baptists down 2% to 1.3 million, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America diown 1.92% to 4.7 million.
The United Church of Christ, President Obama’s denomination, posted a loss of 3% and membership of 1,100,000. Fifty years ago, when this denomination was formed, it boasted a membership of 5,600,000 members.
Even the Southern Baptists Church, once a bastion of conservative Christianity, displayed a decline of .24 percent with a total memberships of 16.2 million.
Roman Catholics, the nation’s largest Christian denomination, grew 1.5% to 68 million members. But this growth was reflective of the mass migration of Latinos to the US and not a ground-swelling of American converts. Click here to read the entire article…

Most of the 33 Haitian children taken by a US group of Baptists in an alleged attempt to move them out of Haiti have family members that survived the earthquake, a care centre chief has said.
Patricia Vargas, regional director of the SOS Children’s Village, where the children are being cared for, told the AFP news agency that officials at the Haitian Institute of Social Welfare told her “most of the kids have family”.
Miss Vargas said some of the older children of the group had confirmed the officials’ words. Children over the age of seven said that “their parents are alive, and some of them gave us an address and phone numbers,” she said. Click here to read the entire article…

The founder of an Islam-oriented television station on trial for beheading his wife claims that he mentally abused for many years by his diminutive spouse and had no recourse except to hack off her head.
Muzzammil Hassan’s claim drew a blunt response from District Attorney Frank Sedita after a hearing Friday.
“He chopped her head off,” Sedita said. “He chopped her head off. That’s all I have to say about Mr. Hassan’s apparent defense that he was a battered spouse.”
Mr. Hassan, 45, stands accused of one count of second-degree murder in the February 12 death of his wife – – 37-year-old Aasiya Hassan – – at the offices of Bridges TV, the station the Pakistan-born couple established in 2004 to counter negative stereotypes of Muslims. WASHINGTON – Al-Qaeda is training female suicide bombers in Yemen, including at least two who do not look Arab and carry Western passports, ABC reported.
According the report, the current threat is tangible but the female bombers have not yet been sent on their suicide missions.
Former White House counter-terrorism official Richard Clarke reported that al-Qaeda trains the female terrorists in Yemen. American officials have said that a recent US air strike on the terror network’s training camp in the country killed many would-be suicide bombers but not all of them.

Speaking as Western leaders gathered in Kabul for Thursday’s swearing-in of President Hamid Karzai, US President Barack Obama said his forthcoming announcement about the war in Afghanistan will include his intent for a complete troop withdrawal in the immediate future.
“I am confident that when I announce my decision the American people will have a lot of clarity about what we are doing, how we are going to succeed… and most importantly what’s the endgame on this thing,” he told CNN.
