POLICE CHIEF APOLOGIZES TO MUSLIM WOMEN
Pat-Searching Female Suspects Forbidden
Political Correctness Gone Crazy
by Dr. Paul L. Williams
Muslim women in burqas can conceal AK-47s and even fully assembled grenade launchers.
They can shield a radiological device and a make shift bomb.
But a law enforcement official cannot frisk them in Canada, let alone pat-search their long black gowns or remove their hijabs to see if they are really men.
Standard police procedures are not permitted when it comes to Muslim women – – even if such procedures are undertaken for reasons of national security.
Windsor police Chief Gary Smith has publicly apologized to the Muslim community for the “embarrassment” caused by his tactical officers who frisked the wives of two wanted terror suspects to see if they were concealing weapons.
Chief Smith issued this statement: “As chief, I recognize the training received by service members was insufficient to address the issues of (the day of the arrest). The actions taken did cause embarrassment and did offend … religious beliefs. I sincerely apologize to the families and the Islamic community.”
The police chief went on to say that the search of the women represented gross insensitivity to Islamic beliefs.
“There really was a better way to do things,” Smith said in a later press conference. “(The incident) was predicated on some ignorance on our part.”
The frisking of the Muslim women came about in an attempt to collar terror suspects who are part of the Ummah clan in Detroit.
On October 29, FBI agents raided a warehouse in Dearborn, Michigan, where they shot and killed Luqman Abdullah, a local Ummah leader.
Many of Abdullah’s henchmen holed up in Windsor, which is just across the border from Dearborn.
At the behest of the FBI, the Windsor police department descended upon the hideout to take Mohammad Al-Sahli, 33, and Yassir Ali Khan, 30, into custody.
The police search the Muslim men for concealed weapons and they also conducted a “pat search” of their wives.
Patrick Ducharme, the lawyer for the two terror suspects, said such contact can be considered a “great personal violation,” particularly among Muslim women.
The police chief responded with an immediate apology.
Mr. Ducharme praised the chief for making the apology.
“That is completely befitting of Gary Smith,” the lawyer for the terror suspects said. “I’ve known him over the years to be a classy, thoughtful and sensitive individual.”
But the president of the Windsor Police Association has taken issue with Chief Smith’s decision. “In my belief, this isn’t a cultural issue,” says Ed Parent. “These officers had a warrant to arrest someone. They went in, and they arrested this person…. That’s it.”
Parent said he hopes the controversy doesn’t affect ESU officers when they do their work. “I want our members to feel secure. They know what their abilities are, and they know what the law is…. They’re just trying to do their jobs.”
In the spirit of political correctness, Al-Sahli and Khan have been released on bail, against the protests of U.S. federal authorities.
The Ummah, which has cells throughout the U.S. and Canada, seeks to establish independent Islamic states within major metropolitan areas. The group was established by Jamil al-Amin, the former Blank Panther H. Rap Brown, who shot and killed a deputy sheriff in Fulton County, Georgia.
