U.S. WARNS ISRAEL NOT TO HONOR ASSASSINATED AMERICAN

RABBI FIRST U.S. VICTIM OF JIHAD

KAHANE CEREMONY OFFENSIVE TO OBAMA

by Michael Travis

Any commemoration in the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) of the anniversary of Rabbi Meir Kahane’s assassination would be harmful to the peace process, the American Embassy told The Jerusalem Post.

The American comments came after the Jerusalem Post obtained e-mails in which an embassy official told Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin’s office that any plans for such a ceremony was “something that Senator [George] Mitchell and his team are following with concern.”

The e-mails also implied that such a ceremony would be frowned upon by President Barack Obama who is attempting to strengthen the U.S. ties to Muslim nations.

The likelihood of such a ceremony taking place was also the subject of a flurry of internal embassy e-mails, in which US officials scrambled to find out where and when a commemoration of the assassinated far-right-wing rabbi would occur.

The American-born Kahane was murdered in New York 19 years ago by an Egyptian-American who was a member of the same al-Qaida cell that carried out the first terror attack on the World Trade Center in 1993.

Rabbi Kahane, who was a prominent right-wing activist for years, was elected to the Knesset in 1984, when his party, Kach, gained a lone seat. Four years later, he was ousted when Kach was declared a racist party, and its members were barred from running for Knesset.

“We are all aware of Rabbi Meir Kahane’s history,” U.S. Embassy spokesman Kurt Hoyer said. “I think that plainly speaks for itself, that obviously he has a controversial history.

“We are of course concerned with trying to get everyone back to the negotiating table. To stir up controversy at the same time that we are trying to get people back to the table it is not productive of that effort. It is only natural that Senator [George] Mitchell would be paying attention to that and the US government as well.”

In Israel, “Kahane was right” is a vernacular expression today whose popularity falls during periods of “quiet” and rises dramatically during intifadas and wars.

  1. Frank says:

Meir Kahane was himself a form of terrorist himself, someone who promoted violence, followed a radical ideology and denied rights to a select population. That he died violently in a violent enviornment that he became a part of.

Kahane’s ideology continues as it still is supported by groups, individuals and some members of Israel’s political sphere – its ideology is just as dark, disgusting and dangerous as those of islamist wahhabists, salafists and others. If they were in power or circumstances allowed it, they too would easily kill and murder and innocents that got in the way would be just collateral damage.

Kahane’s call for an Israel that includes the West Bank, Gaza and Hebron with the choice of the inhabitants as simply “pack up and leave”, “be forced out by force and take the consequences” or “whatever is necessary to get rid of them” is a call for ethnic genocide. That his demand is based on religous scriptures not only smacks of the same hypocrisy of Osama Bin Laden, Khalid Sheik Mohammed and others, but is in fact identical.

To honor and support this man is to honor other terrorists.
