How do you get Somali Muslims to participate in an educational contest?

Do you lure them with a luxury cruise as top prize?

Do you give them a chance to win a walk around the Kaaba free of charge?

No, you offer them a chance to win one-way ticket to jihad, replete with a cache of AK-47 assault rifles, a box of grenades, and a few anti-tank landmines.

Should they get killed in the struggle, the top prize winners are sure to enter seventh heaven where seventy houris (nubile Muslim maidens with bounteous breasts and dark eyes)
will cater to their every whim for all eternity.

The contest, which lasted throughout the month of Ramadan, was a smash success that attracted thousands of participants.

The event was organized by Somalia’s al-Qaeda inspired Shebab group in the southern Somali city of Kismayo.

Five neighborhoods of the port city entered the competition, which consisted mainly of questions on science, culture and the Koran. The contest was aired on the state-controlled radio station.

The top prize winners came from the Farzano district and received the cache of weapons at a ceremony where they were cheered by thousands of onlookers.

“The reason the young men were rewarded with weapons is to encourage them to participate in the ongoing holy war against the enemies of Allah in Somalia,” Sheikh Abdullahi Alhaq said at a ceremony.

Second and third place contestants won AK-47s and boxes of ammunition as consolation prices.

“It was a wonderful event because I have never seen students being rewarded with weapons as a result of an education competition”, Mohamed Hersi, a Kismayo trader who attended the ceremony, told AFP.

“The team in the first place gets the weapons and office equipment worth upward of 1,000 dollars,” Sheikh Abdullahi Alhaq said, sparking cheers and applause in the crowd.

The Shebab and an alliance of local Islamist factions seized control of Kismayo — one of the country’s main ports — more than a year ago and imposed a strict form of Sharia, banning sports, DVDs and Western clothes.

The quiz show’s runners-up had to settle for AK-47s and ammunition.
